GIScience 2021 Workshop on
Advancing Movement Data Science (AMD’21)
27 September 2021, Virtual workshop
AMD 2021 | Organization | Accepted papers | Program Schedule
GIScience 2021 | Past AMD workshops: AMD 2018 | AMD 2016
Workshop Overview
Scope. In the past two decades, many advances have been made in computational movement analysis (CMA) as an important stream of research in GIScience. However, many challenges remain, such as proper incorporation of deep learning in movement data analytics, integration of trajectories with environmental and context data, multi-sensor data integration, scale-adaptive analysis, integration of analytical and visual methods, modeling and simulation of movement in complex coupled human-environment systems, passing from individual to collective movement, combining Lagrangian (GPS) with growing streams of Eulerian movement data (checkpoints, GSM, RFID, passive acoustic arrays for marine wildlife, wildlife camera traps), dealing with massive data in human mobility analytics, incl. privacy and legal considerations, and linking patterns back to behavioral events and processes.
Objectives. This workshop pursues three aims. First, to provide a platform to discuss the state of the art in this domain in the past decade. Second, to discuss the potential of data science methodologies to advance movement analytics in various domains such as human mobility and animal ecology. And third, to identify the key challenges for future research and (re-)define the research agenda towards advancing movement data science.
Workshop Themes
We invite submissions of short position papers or research papers (1500 words) that describe new research ideas that fit the general theme of movement and mobility analytics, including, but not limited to, the following topics:
- Data science and movement analytics
- Integrated science of movement: converging human mobility and movement ecology research
- From patterns to processes: Context-dependent movement analytics and bridging the semantic gap
- From individuals to collectives: Modeling and analyzing interactions between individuals
- Data fusion: Integrating different sensors (e.g. different positioning sensors and accelerometer or locational data with satellite remotely sensed products) and sensing models (checkpoint sensing vs continuous GPS tracking)
- From analysis to modeling: Simulation of movement and mobility
- Mobility and health
- Big mobility data analytics and predictive modeling
- Visualization and visual analytics in support of movement analysis
- Geoprivacy issues and geomasking methods for mobility data
- Ethics of movement data analytics
We are interested in work dealing with any type of moving object (people, animals, vehicles, virus, goods etc.).
Submission Guidelines and Important Dates
Submissions of short (1500 words) position papers or research papers in a pdf format should be directly uploaded to the workshop webpage (AMD 2021) on EasyChair. Please use this word template for paper submissions: GIScience AMD Template 2020.
A research paper can present either finished work or work-in-progress, while a position paper should either describe contemporary research challenges in movement analytics or set out your vision for the development of the field. Please indicate in the title whether your submission is a position paper or research paper.
- Deadline for workshop submissions (1500 words): 9 July 2021
- Decisions to authors: 27 August 2021
- Submission of revised papers: 10 September 2021
- Workshop: 27 September 2021
- Open Call for Special Section of JOSIS sent out: 31 October 2021
- Full paper submission for the special issue: 31 March 2022
Workshop Format
This half-day workshop will consist of short vision and research talks selected from this Call. It will feature a panel session proposing future research directions, followed by a discussion session to reflect on some of the key ideas of the panel in more detail. The workshop will end with a wrap-up session to compile a list of challenges and topics for the future research agenda.
Special Issue
A special feature, with the same scope as the workshop, will be published in the Journal of Spatial Information Science (JOSIS) as an open-access journal “run by and for the benefit of the GIScience community”. Submissions to the special issue may be made by either the workshop participants or others interested in the theme. Participation in the workshop does not guarantee acceptance in the special feature, and all submissions will be submitted to a review process that follows JOSIS standards. The full papers will be due only after the workshop, thus allowing to incorporate feedback and new insights gained at the workshop, and potentially even forming new teams of authors.
Registration Information
Details regarding conference/workshop registration can be found at https://www.giscience.org/registration/. Please note that early registration rates for GIScience end July 30, 2021.
